One-off Colour Studies

Painted on high quality hand made watercolour paper, they have richness of colour and surface quality no print can match. A wide variety of materials is used in their preparation including designers’ gouache, acrylic paint and inks, pastels and oil crayons and pencil, whatever is appropriate to show effects of wear and tear, rust and the casual damage brought about by hard work. This variety of materials leads to colours that are rich and deep and the surface is varied and textured, glossy in some places and matt in others

Edward Smith has completed many colour studies as part of a personal record of selected fishing boats, and as private commissions. These range from Zulu and Fifie sail herring drifters to modern stern trawlers. A recent commission showed a wartime Corvette.

Colour studies are based on reference supplied by the customer and supplemented by information from library or other local sources. Hull length is usually shown as 40cms from stem to stern, and therefore not to scale. But if it is important to the customer that correct scale is shown this can be done at no extra cost. Finished work is delivered flat by post and unframed. They take about a month to do. Postage to addresses abroad is charged at cost, surface mail.

Colour studies are £600 each.
